Pacey and Joey are going for dinner in notably nice restaurants and trying to kiss when he walks her back to her dorm room, so why haven’t they nailed down exactly what they currently are to each other? Unclear, but here’s what won’t help: Rinaldi firing Pacey’s new assistant because she’s in her forties and suggesting Pacey replace her with the much more nubile Joey. As any of our listeners could probably predict, Joey is incompetent yet entitled even before Pacey’s Mystery Girl from the Christmas party returns, now identified as Sadia Shaw, a financial reporter who’s VERY interested in Pacey’s rapid rise as a broker but who Joey can only see as competition for her maybe man. In Los Angeles, Dawson successfully pitches Heather yet another take on his own autobiography, but questions how much he actually wants to get it made if doing so requires reimagining it as a teen sex comedy with heart that revolves around a stripper. CJ and Jen return just to have an implausible all-day fight about how much or little they’re boning. We’re going upside your head (where your ears are) with our episode on “Sex And Violence”! Whether or not Felicity wants to acknowledge it, sexual tension has been simmering between her and Noel since they met, so when Noel interrupts their titular game of Boggle to kiss her, it’s not a huge shock to anyone but her. However, Meghan spreading rumors that the two of them are doing far more than smooch have one huge deleterious effect: Elena gets suspicious that “sexual conspiracy” has tainted the dorm’s mini-fridge lottery. Felicity has to deal with the fallout from Meghan’s big mouth while keeping tabs on Ben’s tryout for the UNY track team — something she’s lucky he hasn’t noticed she’s currently obsessed with. Neither Joey nor Pacey has forgotten their Big K adventure, and the possibilities it opened for their reuniting as a couple. But Joey’s not as ready as Pacey to dive back in, so it’s a good thing they’ve got other business to occupy them. Pacey is called back to Capeside following his father’s medical emergency; Pacey’s new mode of throwing money at his problems rankles Doug, particularly after John treats Pacey like the future of the Witter family and Doug like an old shoe. Dawson is also back home, invited to speak to Mr. Gold’s current film class; a keen kid who wants Dawson’s notes on his short film sends Dawson further down into his career crisis. Joey, meanwhile, has been harassed into babysitting Harley, whose attention to her homework is challenged by the boy in her closet. Noel is organizing a floor party, and Felicity’s expectations for her first college party are stratospheric: she can’t wait to invite Ben, and for him to come that night, and see her, and like the way she looks, and for HER to like the way HE looks, and for them to dance all night and then go back to her room to…talk. Although, as she tells Sally, she has dared to imagine what it might be like to do more than that with “a man” for the first time — something she is so mortified to put on tape that she orders Sally to erase it immediately! Outside of Felicity’s imagination, things are not going so great. The Inorganic Chemistry prof she’s idolized since she used his textbooks in high school is disgusted that she hasn’t been able to find the text for this class. Whenever Felicity mentions Ben to Julie, Felicity can see Julie tense up, despite Julie’s repeated insistence that she and Ben are JUST FRIENDS. Hangs are happening that Felicity isn’t being invited to. Nothing a trip to Bloomingdale’s for a new party dress won’t fix! Probably! Ben is having his own scholastic issues, getting shunted into a drama class where he’s being asked to be vulnerable. It would be very cool if you listened to our episode on “Hot Objects”! When Pacey picks up a Sure Thing at a networking banquet for which he’s enlisted Joey to be his fake date, he has to stop on the way back to her dorm to get, what else, condoms. Their refusal to respect Kmart’s practices to keep customers from entering in the moments before the store closes leads to their getting locked inside. Since their predicament is a very low priority for the police, Joey and Pacey end up bickering about their relationship history before he calls a truce so that their night doesn’t get even worse. Big box store high jinks ensue: nacho cheese! A wall of TVs! A Gillette Mach 3 threatening Pacey’s precious goatee! And more! Felicity is just trying to figure out the new normal now that Ben knows why Felicity’s there, Felicity knows Ben never had a brother who died, and Julie knows Felicity isn’t totally over Ben. When she hears that a young man has called the admissions office trying to get a copy of her application essay, she assumes it was Ben trying to get them back on equal footing, and mails him a copy. Then she bounces into a meeting with Pappaleno only to see both her parents already there, and things rapidly go downhill. While Noel is not busy trying to convince Felicity that when he said he had feelings for her he didn’t REALLY mean it, he’s navigating a roommate conflict between Larry (John Cho), who wishes Lewis wouldn’t keep talking in his sleep about buying knives to kill Larry with; and Lewis, who…seems pretty shifty, actually. The writers’ ambivalent (if not outright confused) views about excessive drinking are inflicted on us once again as Pacey throws himself a belated housewarming party to celebrate a Best Buy shopping spree. At least one of your co-hosts is disgusted by the portrayal of female characters uniformly disdaining the new giant TV; all the dudes are firmly in favor, including Gus, Emma’s fiancé? Yep, turns out she needs an American husband, and fast, because her visa is no longer valid for reasons we should have figured out back when she was hanging around the aquarium every day. Joey is determined to drink away her heartache over Eddie’s departure; Jen is ready to be sober out of respect for CJ, so she’s horrified when she hears that Pacey offered him a drink and he took it. At the other end of the sobriety spectrum, Audrey’s still in rehab in L.A. Dawson comes to visit, not only cloddishly arriving without so much as an Us Weekly but then forgetting whom he’s there for as soon as she spots one of her fellow patients: a producer named Toni Stark. Dawson would have to be made of iron (man) not to parlay this chance sighting into a networking opportunity, right??? Join us as we get down and dirty about “Clean And Sober”! Felicity Porter (Keri Russell) is at her commencement, realizing she’s not as happy about the life her parents have mapped out for her: doing all her schooling at Stanford to become a doctor, exactly like her dad. So when she bravely asks her crush, Ben (Scott Speedman) to become the second person to sign her senior yearbook and finds out he’s going to “New York” for college, she finds her acceptance letter to the same school and decides to enroll there too. When she runs into him again on campus in the fall, his reaction is her first sign that her impulsive decision isn’t going to pan out exactly the way she might have hoped when she made it. We’re telling you all about everyone she meets — and how she frames it to her audio cassette tape pen pal Sally — in our episode on the Felicity pilot! We’re off this week but we bring you three Again With Again With This episodes from the club vault. AWAWT 253: Let’s Watch Joshua Jackson In Cruel Intentions! How to reinvent Les Liaisons Dangereuses for the late 20th century Youthquake moment? Set it among Upper East Side high school brats, and throw in a couple of stars from The WB! AWAWT 254: Let’s Watch Robin Dunne In Cruel Intentions 2! A TV iteration of Cruel Intentions, Manchester Prep, was planned for FOX’s 1999-2000 primetime schedule…until Rupert Murdoch (allegedly) had the project sacked for being too crass (!), at which time it was reworked as a prequel, Cruel Intentions 2, and everything about it is…number two: the casting, the timeline, the geography, the wardrobe, and Robin “AJ” Dunne as Valmont makes Ryan Phillippe look like Jon Hamm. This is possibly the crappiest show-verse property we’ve ever contemplated, and we’re talking about that, plus early TWoP days, Some Kind Of Wonderful, and “frisky twins” (ew). Listen now! AWAWT 255: Let’s Watch Kerr Smith In Cruel Intentions 3! So it’s come to this: a Cruel Intentions sequel with none of the original talent attached. (Not even poor old Pierre Choderlos de Laclos gets a credit!) After Kathryn has ruined the family with her antics in New York, her cousin Cassidy is forced to lie low at a college in Santa Barbara, where she and her frenemy and sparring partner Jason (Kerr Smith!) simply can’t stop betting on sex. How does this entry slyly cross over with both American Psycho and Sex & The City? We’ll tell you everything important! …Which admittedly isn’t much. After Joey found Audrey unconscious at the end of the previous episode, she got in touch with the Liddells offscreen, and arrangements have been made for Audrey to enter a rehab program in the Los Angeles area. Except, whoops, no one thought this person deep in substance misuse disorder might pretend to head for the airport, then actually find a karaoke bar, bring a guy named Bob (Seth Rogen!) back to a local hotel room, and hide out. Since Eddie has decided to try to enroll in that writers’ workshop and, conveniently, drive himself across the country that very night, Joey volunteers him to drive Audrey too — something Audrey only agrees to if they also bring Bob. Since Joey learned nothing from this flight risk the first time, predictable mayhem ensues. Dawson is way out over his skis on reshoots, enduring open disrespect from his DP and Natasha and threats from Heather (whose fault this is, honestly). And when Grams clashes with an entirely offscreen Mr. Smalls, Jen decides the answer is to set her up with CJ’s widowed Uncle Bill (Geoffrey Lewis! …You’ll know him when you see him). Following her sheepish west coast reunion with Dawson, Audrey returns to Boston. Smoothing things over is pretty easy with MOST of her friends, but Emma and the other Hell’s Belles need more convincing, especially with a gig opening for Loudermilk just hours away. Audrey convinces Emma to give her another chance, and probably really believes all her promises about turning over a new leaf when she makes them! Spending more time with Joey convinces Harley that she has to intervene between her and Eddie, but credit to her: the crazy caper she comes up with to get him back to Hell’s Kitchen actually does work…briefly. And Pacey dares to attend another party with Rinaldi: it seems like Pacey’s frictionless rise through the ranks at the brokerage is continuing, though a Mystery Girl (Sarah Shahi!) observing him warns him to be on his guard. We’re following the teens of Dawson’s Creek through each day of a particularly eventful week. Joey, back at school after the holidays, is leaving dozens of messages for Eddie that are going unreturned, and she’s not the only one looking for him: Harley’s back, too. Jen has finally been worn down on volunteering at The Stand, and she must really be committed if she’s letting CJ train her at this stage in their relationship; meanwhile, David and Jack are taking the Big Step of getting tested for STIs together. Dawson and Todd return to L.A., where the latter is not quite ready to receive fearless feedback from studio executive Larry Newman (Paul Gleason!). And when Pacey runs into Emma there, the aquarium becomes the site for the two to get to know each other much better than ever before. Today is the day for our episode on “Day Out Of Days”! It’s the holidays, but not the peace on earth/goodwill to men kind. Joey weirds Eddie out by inviting him back to Capeside, which he declines, opening the door for Joey to make the same invitation to Audrey after Audrey drunkenly misses her flight back to Los Angeles. Pacey can’t wait to drive his new Beemer up to the Witter house and rub his family’s collective nose in all his financial success. Dawson decides to continue ignoring his hurt over Natasha’s possible infidelity by inviting her to Capeside…and Todd also comes, possibly just so there’s someone to hit on Gale? Finals are almost over, but the universe is punishing Joey by scheduling Hetson’s after nearly everyone else is done, and she can’t find a quiet place to study. Eddie’s offer to borrow his apartment while he’s at work is both generous and maybe a little strategic, since they do end up fooling around in a naked way that’s so tiring Joey falls back to sleep and misses most of the exam. As we all know, academic desperation typically doesn’t bring out her best, but…just kidding, she’s terrible this time too. Todd’s movie has its own “Drew Barrymore in Scream“-type cameo artist: a movie star named Max Winter who is working with Spielberg next. Dawson gets way too jealous about it, possibly with just cause. Pacey’s boiler room is having a holiday party, so he invites Emma to come and even insists on buying her a new dress to wear for the occasion! There’s just one little thing about this particular party that he probably should have made sure to tell her before she showed up for it. Before Todd got into the flop movie business, he was a very well regarded music video director, which is how he knows No Doubt; that they are keeping tabs on him enough to give him like a dozen comps is kind of a surprise, but sure, why the hell not. Dawson gives them to Jen to distribute. Joey and Eddie get a pair, Eddie discovering while Joey hard-sells him that she expects their first date to be a hang with all her friends, one of whom was kicking glass at him not very long ago. Jack and David get a pair, and David’s good old friend CJ also gets one after Jen literally runs into him in the record store and can’t sense the palpable tension between him and Audrey. And Pacey gets one because Jen thinks if he and Audrey just got back into proximity with each other, they’d work out all their issues. As we know, Audrey is not doing so great. But since she’s being louder and crazier than ever before instead of talking to anyone about it, no one can quite tell exactly what’s going on until she starts pounding shots ahead of her latest Hell’s Belles gig and getting nasty to Eddie while Joey stands by uselessly. Actually, one person can tell what’s going on: CJ, and this is the episode where we find out why. Freeman announces to the class that his new book has earned him a guest lecturer gig in Chicago, but before he goes, he has a bunch of things he’d like to not quite say to Jack. When Pacey and the rest of the aspiring stockbrokers pass their Series 7 exams, Rinaldi takes them all on a whirlwind trip to New Orleans to be disgusting in a whole other time zone. It’s Halloween, and what do you know: the stage where Todd’s shooting his movie has spooooooky lore. Never mind that this is clearly all taking place in a warehouse that was MAYBE built in the mid-70s: a flash of an old screen test in some of Todd’s dailies leads him and Natasha to tell Dawson the story of Melanie Ray, a 50s movie star whose co-star husband found out she was having an affair with her director and strangled her to death on camera. “That sucks,” says Dawson, and probably regrets his understatement when he starts seeing someone who looks a lot like Melanie flitting around the stage, eluding his attempts to chase her down. Is it just a costume party guest paying tribute to the late Melanie, or her actual ghost?! Speaking of the costume party: Pacey and Audrey also attend, dressed as Sid and Nancy, but the camaraderie of a couples costume can’t paper over the widening cracks in their relationship. Also present but almost entirely in their own silo are Jack and Jen, the former convincing the latter to invite CJ. When he shows up with a friend Jen immediately decides is not just gay but CJ’s boyfriend, Jack hatches a plan for them to split the two up and figure out their deal, but ends up wishing he hadn’t. Joey negotiates Eddie’s re-admission to Hetson’s class by agreeing to babysit his daughter that night, assuming she’s the 5-year-old in the photo on his desk. In fact, she’s a crabby teenager who’s not happy Hetson’s dumped her on a stranger so he can go on a date instead of honoring their Halloween tradition and taking her to a scary movie. Once she meets Eddie, she manipulates him into glomming on to their plans, but if you remember how similar plans went when Brandon Walsh and Emily Valentine weren’t quite a couple yet but still ended up looking after a kid on Halloween…well, things take a similar turn here. Two pairs of sparring partners are still trapped in emotional tar pits: Joey can’t stop being hostile to Eddie, while even the Series 7-obsessed Pacey can’t help noticing that Audrey seems preoccupied by something, though he’s got so much studying to do that when she says she doesn’t want to talk about it, he’s only too happy not to press the matter. Joey is shaken out of her assumptions about Eddie when he defends her from another attack by Hetson, and Hetson turns his acid on Eddie instead, hinting at a secret Eddie probably doesn’t want everyone to know. Meanwhile, Audrey’s singing in Pacey’s shower convinces Emma that Audrey could front Emma’s punk band in its début performance. Todd is less concerned than Dawson that the slasher flick is already days behind schedule, though that changes when Heather the studio executive descends on the set to yell at him and threaten to fire Natasha. (Remember Heather? Played by Nicole Bilderback? S05 premiere?) Todd is apparently unable to defend his own choices, so it’s a good thing the 19-year-old CHILD he currently employs as his assistant is there to fix everything. Jack gets his first paper back in Freeman’s class, and wonders whether his unimpressive grade might have been a few notches higher if he’d positively responded to Freeman’s overture at the end of the last episode. Dawson is back on set in Boston for the first day of shooting, and things aren’t going great. For one thing, Todd fired the PA who was supposed to pick up the leading lady at the airport, and someone who was already “a handful” to begin with doesn’t get any more mellow after being made to wait an hour. Back at Hell’s Kitchen, Eddie goes from a lecture about On The Road from Joey to a huge catering order. Could it be from– But no, it couldn’t. COULD IT?! (It is.) Pacey is very responsibly begging off a night with Audrey to study for his exam when Rinaldi orders him to come out clubbing with some of the big bosses. Audrey, Jen, and Jack are on their way to a house party when they round a corner just as some guy is bellowing about hitting up a strip club next. Could it…okay, yeah, it is. Lucky for Jack, this doesn’t change his plans, because what might be waiting for HIM at the party is destiny. We’ve given you exactly what you deserve: our episode on “Instant Karma!.” JOIN THE AWT CLUB 🌴 Access to 'Again With Again With This' bonus episodes 👯♀️ Access to 'Again With Them,' our monthly digest of Tori and Jennie's 9021OMG podcast 💬 Access to the AWT Discord (Patreon only) 🚫 Ad free episodes EPISODE NOTES 🗒 Visit this episode's page on our site 🖼️ View this episode's 41 Visual Aids 📜 Read this episode's transcript 🐝 Will & Grace S07.E17: "The Birds And The Bees" ♠️ Poker Face S02.E02: "Last Looks" on Peacock 🎧 Looking to get older episodes on your app? Joey’s got a lot of big feelings about how she and Dawson left things at the end of the previous episode, and she decides the best way to get them to him is via email. Then she sends it without noticing she has sent it not to Dawson but to “Campus Wide,” as in the entire Worthington student AND employee email list, because she clicked “send” WITH HER EYES CLOSED. Aren’t students at Fake Harvard supposed to be smart? Shamefully embarrassing though this is, nothing is helped by Professor Hetson not just piling on but using class time to do it. The only saving grace is that her nemesis Eddie isn’t present to witness it, but don’t worry: Joey, the most important person in the city of Boston, tells him all about it — bitchily, of course. Pacey starts at Rinaldi’s stock brokerage, discovering that no one is going to hold his hand through the job and that sometimes people who work in finance are unethical; sorry if this episode description is how YOU found that out. Jack pursues every possible avenue to get face time with Professor Freeman, who either really doesn’t get why Jack is so interested in making himself known, or is just less reckless than Professor Wilder was. The hours following the long-delayed consummation of Dawson and Joey’s intermittently romantic relationship are spent intermittently trying to define what it all means before Joey ends up at the set of Todd’s movie and finds out…Dawson has turned it into his childhood home. Should Joey be alarmed that Dawson’s dragging them both into the past? Should Dawson read into the fact that she seems so into it?! Pacey makes it to his big interview and lands a spot in the stockbroker training program run by Rich Rinaldi (Dana Ashbrook); whether he can survive working for a second former Twin Peaks cast member (Ashbrook played Bobby) remains to be seen, but it does give Pacey the confidence to take another crack at Emma’s apartment. And Jen has a meet-cute — facilitated by Grams — with her new potential love interest: C.J., played by a pre-Supernatural Jensen Ackles. After spending a summer in their various silos, the credits cast are reuniting in Boston. Jen’s happy her parents are getting divorced; she’s not so thrilled that Grams is looking to expand her horizons. Jack had an offscreen relationship with Eric, and is now sneaking multiple guys (one at a time) out of Grams Manor as part of his continuing offscreen sex life. Audrey’s convinced that after her fun summer with Pacey in L.A., their breakup is imminent. And Joey and Dawson…didn’t talk over the summer literally at all, not even once?! The school year is over and everyone is TRYING to move on to their next adventures, but figures from their past are getting in the way. A delayed flight lets Jack reunite with Eric, who’s decided against spending the summer trying to come out to his parents and has returned to Boston to work on himself. Jen is eager to get to Costa Rica, but as soon as Dawson finds out about her parents’ invitation, he starts giving her the guilts about it. Joey and Pacey, back in Capeside, wonder if they should be so passive about Dawson and Audrey winging off to Los Angeles and away from them. Schoooooooool’s! Out! For! Summer! Joey clears out her dorm room, bringing Audrey home to see if Capeside is as thrilling in person as it has been in Joey’s undoubtedly stultifying stories. Dawson gives them a lift, and manages to wait until the next day to tell Audrey that his new agent has found a producer in L.A. who wants to mentor him and Oliver on possibly remaking their movie into something bigger. Jack and Jen, of course, don’t have to pack up their rooms, but they are planning to pack some bags and go on a vacation together. But as soon as they’ve decided that their destination should be Costa Rica, Grams give Jen some bad news: her terrible parents bought a house in Easthampton and want Jen to spend the summer with them there. Pacey’s work life hasn’t gotten any easier: Alex is putting on a luncheon for investors to convince them to open a second Civilization in Philadelphia, and since everything has to be perfect, you’d think she’d try a little harder not to alienate her ENTIRE staff in the hours and minutes before her guests are due to arrive. Season 5 is almost over, and so is the semester at Worthington AND Boston Bay Colleges. While Joey stays put trying to study for multiple exams, everyone else rolls through to include her in their business. Dawson giggles so much at This Is Spinal Tap that Joey kicks him out to a screening of sex, lies, and videotape, where he runs into Amy fleeing Storytelling, and the two decide to spend the night together instead. Audrey babbles about Pacey keeping secrets from her — which he is, on Jack’s advice, regarding Alex’s kiss at the end of the previous episode. And a frantic Jack, missing crucial course notes and completely desperate, begs her to tell him anything she knows about multivariable calculus. Pacey seems to think he can handle whatever energy Alex keeps directing at him, but he also seems determined to ignore every opportunity to keep their relationship professional. Aggressive Mediocrity has been offered the gig of a lifetime: a ten-city tour supporting a Go-Go’s tribute band! If Charlie had any family that cared about him even a little, they might be telling him he shouldn’t drop out of his college classes in the hopes that he’s going to make it big with his college-town cover band, but he doesn’t, which is why he’s not only planning to go, but thinks Joey should drop out and go with him, as his girlfriend. When she immediately declines, telling him HE should totally still go if he wants, he’s not trying to hear that, deciding at this pivot point in his life that he needs to stay in Boston and devote all the time he formerly spent performing with her. Out of absolutely nowhere, Civilization gets sold to a conglomerate with a lot of big plans. Audrey and Pacey are both worried that new manager Alex Pearl (Sherilyn Fenn!) won’t want to keep them around. Only one of them is right. Oliver and Dawson have rescheduled their meeting with the New York agent who might be interested in representing them; while Dawson is eager to practice how they’re going to approach it, Oliver believes being himself is the way to go, and if you’re not sure how that works out, you haven’t been paying attention. It’s Spring Break! And even though Joey is not sure she cares to present herself as prey for the goons who are going to be headed to Florida to try to get on MTV’s cameras, she lets Dawson talk her into going to spend the week in Audrey’s parents’ beach house, where no one’s really capable of having fun: Jack is keeping secrets, Jen is getting a cold, and both Pacey AND Audrey are keeping their guard up around each other rather than admit that they actually want to be boyfriend/girlfriend. They haven’t even really gotten close when suddenly a ghost appears from Audrey’s past: Chris, her high school boyfriend of two years; on top of being, as Audrey puts it, her “Dawson,” he’s also a movie star in the making AND still hung up on Audrey. Speaking of being hung up: Charlie, who ignores Joey’s flirtatious sort-of rejections to find his way to her and try to push past the barriers she’s put up against him. While this is all going on, Dawson — en route to New York to meet an agent who likes the (still untitled) movie — regales Oliver with the hours-long story of his relationship with Joey, in the process convincing himself of something HORRIBLE. Dawson having Frankensteined Oliver’s still-untitled movie into some kind of barely viewable but still misshapen format, Oliver gets a great idea: to schedule a public screening on campus and invite a real film critic to come see it! Dawson didn’t know that part, which is how he manages to offend her within seconds of meeting her. Nearly everyone else who gets dragged into attending this nightmare is at a high emotional pitch: Joey is letting herself dream about getting something going with Charlie; Grams suddenly has a boyfriend; Oliver’s ready to pursue his crush on the now-single Jen; and Pacey has opened the door to investigating how many people Audrey slept with before him, getting answers he really doesn’t like. Why would the singer quit Charlie's band RIGHT before a big-break upstate gig they're getting paid decent money for? To give Dawson's Creek a pretext for Katie Holmes to sing not one but THREE pop songs, of course! Sigh. Audrey goes along because she wants to, and Pacey is convinced to drive her and Joey because he wants to keep fooling around with Audrey, then regrets it as soon as Charlie shows up, having overslept and missed the van with the rest of the guys. Cue posturing from both alpha males that can only be defused with Audrey's timely, uh, intervention. The gig does give Joey an excuse to miss a trip back to Capeside for Lilly's first birthday party, but Grams, Jack, and Jen are required to go with him, getting a front-row seat to Dawson's heartbreak when he finds out Gale has made a single dad "friend" named Nathan. This is terrible timing for Jen, who had already announced to Jack before they left Boston that she was planning to break up with Dawson, but now doesn't want to add to his pain. We're back from Joey's departure episode, and everyone has tons of plot to get through! Allegedly Joey's friends are taking turns babysitting her, though the only one we see her with is Dawson, which is how he gets a front-row seat to Joey's awkwardness around Wilder when she spots him on a date mere hours after he rejected her. Dawson is only on this platonic outing with Joey because Jen excused him from going with her to see a band she then has to interview for the radio station; she takes Audrey as her plus-one instead, which is convenient since Audrey needs a reason to keep her loins away from Pacey. And speaking of Pacey: he spends his evening with Jack at a bar that doesn't card, but that's not the only feature that sets it apart from Boston's many other watering holes; we don't know if it's a place where everybody knows Jack's name, but they probably have a pretty good idea of what he's into. Remember how triumphant Joey was when she pitched that very fake snowball at a T sign at the end of "Guerrilla Filmmaking"? Well, we hope she does, because her night gets a lot worse from there: she's accosted by a mugger, and losing all her liquid assets AND her coat is just the start of her ordeal. All the excitement Dawson had about directing Oliver's movie has dissipated now that he's actually shooting it: Oliver is a terrible actor, the ending still doesn't work, and everyone has ideas that may or may not conflict with Dawson's vision. On top of that, learning lines is getting a little too Method for Audrey and Pacey, who's helping her; and Audrey's also getting caught up in the drama of her roommate Joey's entanglement with Wilder. Elsewhere, Jack is trying to get back into his frat brothers' good graces after the Civilization bar fight in the previous episode; Eric's overtures may not be something Jack can safely take at face value. The time has finally come for Dawson to quit screwing around and enroll at a school in Boston -- "Viz Arts," as he is apparently determined to call it. Oliver from the New Hampshire film festival spots him on campus almost immediately and wastes no time almost literally throwing his insanely long new script at Dawson and asking him to direct it. Possibly in part because Dawson can tell how much their classmates hate Oliver, Dawson demurs...but remains exactly polite enough to irritate Jen as Oliver keeps stealing time away from her and Dawson. But considering that Jen's producers at the radio station are so sick of how shmoopy she is on mic lately, a little rage may be just what her relationship with Dawson needs right now. Elliot works up the courage to ask Joey out for dinner and a movie, and she accepts. Yay! But then Prof. Wilder swoops in with a closing dinner for everyone who worked on the Rose Lazar archive, and it's the SAME NIGHT as her date. Boo! The way you can tell that, despite her denials, Joey IS hot for teacher is how shady she is breaking her date with Elliot in Prof. Wilder's favor. Jack is trying to be super-casual about the fact that he landed on academic probation precisely one semester into college, but no one else feels that way -- not even his frat brothers, who alternately stress out about how Jack's failure will reflect on the house and mock him for being stupid. Jack's got a lot to drink about! You might also want something alcoholic to pair with our episode on "Something Wilder"! Jen and Dawson have now been housemates nearly as long as they've been dating, and Jen is getting itchy: she's grossed out when Dawson wants to use her toothbrush (which he only has to because she commandeered his for makeup purposes) and violated when he starts going through her stuff in the bathroom. Jen channels these feelings into advice for the female students who call in asking for relationship tips, which is fine until Dawson tunes in just as she's saying that although you can delay it with sex, all men leave. Jack is finding out this is true in a sense at the frat house: as he moves in to a capacious single, upperclassman Blossom is moving into a shared room with Eric. Turns out Jack is right to be suspicious about how THAT arrangement came about. On the heels of Pacey's big promotion at [eye-roll] Civilization, Melanie returns with a thrilling offer: her uncle bought a bigger boat and he's taking it out to sail around the Greek Islands...in three days. What will Pacey do? And will his increased contact with Audrey sway his decision? Professor Wilder's new course boasts both Joey and Elliot, the guy Joey literally bumped into in the season premiere. After Wilder (creepily) notices Elliot watching Joey during class and (even more creepily) forces him to talk to her, Joey has to determine whether it's worth getting involved with one of Audrey's exes...or is he? Having said in the previous episode that she was relieved Jen was taking the responsibility of taking care of Dawson apparently doesn't preclude Joey from ALSO being jealous of them. And since the incredible grades she just got are worthy of celebration, she hits the club with Audrey and Pacey to take her mind off things. Running into Charlie should put her mind back ON Jen, but then he hits on her and gives her a devilish idea that Audrey and Pacey have to put their flirting on hold to witness. Meanwhile, Dawson brings Jen back to Capeside, where Gale is confronted by their new relationship status because her clod son didn't tell her about it in advance. When the plot conveniently removes him, Jen and Gale get serious about what Dawson should be doing with his life now and which of them should be the one to order him around. Remember in the weirdly rescheduled Halloween episode when Pacey promised to make dinner for everyone when Jen and Dawson came back from New Hampshire? It's time. On their way in, Dawson and Jen agree to keep things low-profile before proceeding to mack on the doorstep AND in the foyer, where their friends all immediately witness them doing. Cue the entrances and exits as Jack worries that Jen and Dawson are both too emotionally raw for what they're embarking on, everyone monitors Joey for signs of an imminent breakdown, and Pacey is alternately annoyed by and concerned about his diners failing to appreciate his food. We tell you where everyone leaves things, so we hope you brought an appetite for our episode on "Appetite For Destruction"! What better time to tell four scary stories than...right between Thanksgiving and Christmas? Here's the flimsy pretext: after coming home from a so-so horror movie, Joey, Jack, and Pacey make like a Treehouse Of Horror and tell their own stories. What happened to Joey in the library? Jack when he was alone in the frat house? Pacey on an improbable drive home with Karen? And what scarifying tale did Grams hear from Jen? We go through them all in our latest podcast episode, if you're not too much of a fraidy-cat to listen! On Dr. Weir's encouragement, Dawson decides he should go to the Hooksett, NH Film Festival and collect his prize for his documentary on Mr. Brooks. Since Jen is eager to get away from Charlie and Nora, Dawson suggests that she come...................as it were but NO SPOILERS. Jack invites Joey to be his date for the frat's winter formal, but when the call goes out at the house to hook unattached brothers up with girls who are goers, Jack admits that he might know one, and sets his brother Eric up with Audrey. What conflict ensues probably wouldn't if Eric were at all a decent conversationalist. Pacey decides to reframe the narrative with Karen by asking her out on a no-expectations, non-romantic date, but Pacey being Pacey, his best-laid plans...................okay, again, no spoilers. With Jen's support, Dawson returns to Dr. Weir's office and finds out a lot: she thinks his panic attacks might be about more than just Mitch's death; he's entitled to be angry at Mitch even though he's dead; and, oh yeah, she's played by a pre-NCIS Pauley Perrette, looking just plain wrong as a blonde (yes, even with very dark roots). While Audrey gets a lovestruck film geek to help her with her audition tape for The Real World Ibiza, Joey gets deep into the Rose Lazar archive. You wouldn't think the two could have anything to do with each other but, preposterously, they do. And as the restaurant prepares to celebrate a big anniversary, Pacey tells Karen he knows, which only makes his job there more complicated. We've got your audiotape on "Text, Lies And Videotape"! Having ruled out any physical source of the periodic faintness Dawson's been feeling, Dawson's doctor recommends a therapist specializing in grief who works in Boston. Dawson doesn't tell anyone he has an appointment to see her, which may be why he only makes it as far as her waiting room before bailing to try to put on a brave face with his friends -- including Jack, who takes him straight to a frat party for some drinking games. This gets Dawson just wasted enough to say some really hurtful things to Joey when he sees her later that night. By that point, Joey has already been listening to hurtful things all night: Audrey's mother Kay (Brenda Strong!) has come to town to re-up all the food and body issues Audrey may have allowed to go dormant in her absence. Elsewhere, Jen is still moping about having spotted Charlie kissing another girl, but when Pacey points out that she can always get even with him, Jen decides to run with it. Don't be anxious: our episode on "High Anxiety" is right here -- and Adam Grosswirth is sitting in for Sarah as our very special guest co-host! Having apparently exhausted his usefulness at home, Gale sends him to Worthington to hang out with Joey for a couple of days. Given Dawson's lack of interest in her when she was home for the funeral, she is nervous as hell about how the visit's going to go. Once he gets there, he doesn't seem especially psyched to watch a movie on her tiny TV even before they get to a scene that too closely mirrors recent events in his life. When she mentions a party at Professor Wilder's house, he's eager to go...until he actually gets there and immediately feels trapped. What is happening to Dawson's emotions and why? (...We all know, but it's 2001; they hadn't heard of trauma yet back then.) Pacey's in the middle of telling Jen all about his amazing new mentor Danny and crush Karen when Jen happens to spot Charlie through the window of a restaurant: he told Jen he had a shift at the radio station that night, but here he is dining with ANOTHER GIRL?! While Jen comes to terms with Charlie's possible trampiness, Pacey starts to get inklings that Danny isn't all he's cracked up to be. Tobey comes to town to surprise Jack on what unfortunately happens to be Hell Week for the frat pledges. Can Jack balance his obligations to his new friends with the attention he needs and wants to pay his boyfriend? Use your ears to enjoy our episode on "Use Your Disillusion"! Mitch is dead, and everyone's stopped their lives to deal with it. All the Boston students, plus Grams and Pacey, come back for the funeral. (Evidently all Pacey's relatives -- including Gretchen, who lives less than a half-day's drive away -- had better things to do.) Jen doesn't know how to help Dawson, and says so to him. Joey thinks she does, and gets rebuffed. Dawson himself is handling as much of the preparations as he can because Gale has fully broken down, though when he does open up, it's to tell Joey he blames himself entirely for Mitch's death. This is such a relentlessly grim one that we better get at least three kooky ones to balance it out, but for now, say hello to our episode on "The Long Goodbye"! It turns out Danny's restaurant is quite a hot spot, which is how a scenester like Joey (sarcasm) happens to be there on one of Pacey's first nights working there. Jen readily confesses everything she knows about his time in Boston, including that THIS chance glimpse really did happen by chance, since Jen didn't know he worked there. Once Joey has heard that Pacey asked Jen not to tell Joey he was in town, Joey starts spinning out that he must not want to see her. Fortunately, Audrey is there to convince her to get over herself. Dawson is also still hanging out in Boston, dragging his feet on telling his parents that he wants to drop out of USC and move to Boston. When he finally does, Mitch is stern and judgmental to Dawson while admitting to Gale that he really did miss Dawson and wasn't upset to see him back. Neither parent thinks it's a great idea for him to change his college plan to spend more time with a girl he's not even dating, and they've obviously got a point. Jen starts overthinking her relationship with Charlie, forcing them both into a sex fast so that they can actually have conversations and learn about each other. And Jack finds out he has one specific attribute that made the Sigma Epsilon brothers want to pursue him as a pledge. Visit our visit to "Capeside Revisited"! We’re off this week but we bring you two Again With Again With This episodes from the club vault. AWAWT 172: Let's Watch Linda Gray AND Donna Mills In Ladies Of The '80s: A Divas Christmas! Life imitates art -- or maybe Lifetime imitates soaps -- as a bunch of daytime divas from an earlier age reunite for a special episode of their old show, and help a couple of young people out of their own way in the process. Call your mom -- she might be wondering which of her favorite stars from Knots Landing and Dallas are still alive! AWAWT 220: Let’s Watch Laura Leighton In Naked City: A Killer Christmas! The Naked City (1948) spawned a TV show in the fifties, AND two Showtime movies in the nineties; the second one stars Laura Leighton as an ambitious but ambivalent tabloid-newsmag anchor. It also stars Scott Glenn and Courtney B. Vance as cop partners, but are they (or Bogdanovich's direction) enough to save a corny script? Dawson having shown up in Boston as none of us particularly wanted him to, he's had a delightful weekend (offscreen) with Joey. That all changes on his last day when he finally thinks to call his USC dorm room for the one and only message on his answering machine: the one Joey left, while drunk at a frat party, telling him that SHE. Is OVER. HIM. Or something like that. Suddenly, Dawson is incensed, so it's a good thing Joey has an administrative task to handle: it's the last day she can drop Professor Wilder's Creative Writing class, so she's going to be standing in an hours-long line while Dawson has Audrey give him the campus tour and listen to his bitching about his lonely loser life in Los Angeles. (Which we already had a glimpse of with that nearly empty answering machine.) Pacey turns out not to be a lonely loser on the yacht: he's seeing a rich girl named Melanie (future House and Once Upon A Time star Jennifer Morrison!), this summer's boat babe, and this one will even sleep with him. Pacey has just blown off a job hookup Doug arranged for him with his chef friend when Melanie casually picks up their lunch check at a fine dining establishment, because Pacey is unemployed. But the Pacey who loves taking care of people can't let THAT stand. Maybe working for Doug's friend won't be so bad! After days of fruitless wandering, Jen chances back upon Charlie during his show at the campus radio station. Tiresome flirting over 80s music and feminist literature leads them straight into bed -- oldest story in the world. Don't go anywhere: you've found our episode on "The Lost Weekend"! Joey is working hard to deserve her spot at Worthington -- not just studying but grade-grubbing, particularly with her creative writing instructor Professor Wilder (Ken Marino!), and getting a reputation as an enemy of fun with her free-spirited roommate Audrey (Busy Philipps!). Over at Boston Bay College, Jack is trying to stay faithful in his long-distance relationship with Tobey while trying to find a guy for Jen for the first time since Henry, yes really. A chance invitation to a frat party puts Jen in the path of Charlie (Chad Michael Murray!), the cute bass guitarist in the party band, and makes Joey realize she really might be stuck in the past. She could have been even FURTHER stuck there, however, since Dawson was supposed to visit this weekend until he got an internship starting immediately. But excited as he was to work under hotshot director Todd, the lessons Dawson learns are tougher than the Capeside wunderkind is used to. Dawson, naturally, got into the USC summer program, so we join him on his last day in Capeside. It's hard! His father is being very bossy about what kind of laptop Dawson should get and with whom he should be spending his last dinner before college. His ex-girlfriends Jen and Joey keep bringing up stuff they talked about three seasons ago. His absent best friend Pacey is phoning from "paradise" to say how much their friendship means to him. Not that he knows it, but Jen is giving Joey the idea that if Joey just asked Dawson to stay, he would. And maybe she's right -- Dawson still hasn't even packed yet! It's also Grams and Jen's last day in Capeside, but no one seems to care about that nearly as much. Maybe the Led Zeppelin album Coda announced, "I Can't Quit You Baby," but we CAN quit Season 4 in our latest episode!
